Actions wizard

Actions define which Filter Groups the chart or grid responds to through Incoming Actions and what the chart does when it is selected in Outgoing Actions. Use actions to make your charts interactive by having them respond to the data filters.

  • Use Incoming Actions to select which Filter Groups affect the data in this chart.

  • Use Outgoing Actions to define what happens when the user clicks on a component (zoom, drill down, filter, etc.), and to determine if the chart will act as a filter to other components.

Set up incoming actions

A chart can have its data filtered by a filter component or by another chart or grid configured to act as a filter. This is done by linking the two components through a Filter Group. Filters and components are configured to act as filters that "broadcast" their filtering information through a particular Filter Group.

Charts and grids can listen to none, one or multiple Filter Groups. This provides a mechanism to target which Filters control which data for display.

  1. Click a component to open the wizard.
  2. Click the Actions icon to open the Action Options pane.

    The Incoming Actions tab appears.

  3. Select the groups you want the chart to respond to by selecting the check boxes on the left.
  4. Select one of the following to indicate the conditions for displaying data:
    • The component should not display data until one or several values are set on the dimension field.

    • The component should not display data until the group has the active filter.

Outgoing actions tab

You can set up a chart as an interactive object that responds to clicks from the user to provide more details. It can also be instructed to serve as a filter to other components.

For Outgoing Actions from one chart to filter a different chart, the Filter Group must be the same for both components (the chart acting as a filter and the chart being filtered must share a Filter Group). Use the Outgoing Actions tab on one chart and the Incoming Actions tab on the other.

  1. In the Actions wizard, go to the Outgoing Actions tab.
  2. Select which user action will trigger a response.
  3. Select which response you want the user to get when the triggering action is taken.

Zoom

The user can use the Zoom option to click on a component to see a larger image of the chart.

Drill down

Selecting the Drill Down option permits the user to drill into the data in greater detail. What the user can drill into depends on which drill-down options were selected in the Display panel.

Use the value of the dimension as a filter

By using the dimension value as a filter, a chart can use whatever value the user has selected to filter other charts or components. For outgoing actions to influence a given chart, the Filter Group must be the same for both components (the chart acting as a Filter and the chart being filtered). The same is true for grid components.

  • Current Selected Dimension: Tells the chart to filter other charts in the group by the selected dimension.

  • Value of Dimension or Field: Tells the chart to filter its target charts by the specific value selected here.

  • Apply Scope to the components of group: Select which Filter Group the chart is targeting.

Display different view in new window

You can instruct a chart or grid to display a different View in a new window.

Once you complete the procedure, users can click any section of the chart to have it launch the View you have defined in a new window.

Note You must close the new View before you can interact with the original View.

  1. Select Popup a window and display a view.
  2. Click the ellipsis button below this option, and in the menu that appears, select a View you have previously designed.
  3. Select Scoped By Dimension to filter the components in the pop-up view by the selected dimension.
