Applying Auto Contrast Settings

Use the Auto Contrast settings to apply optimal contrast settings to challenging black and white documents as they are scanned. While the Auto Contrast feature is active, Kofax VRS determines the optimal contrast settings and updates the values accordingly. The Auto Contrast settings supersede the contrast values that are in effect when Auto Contrast is not active.

If you select Auto Contrast and subsequently make manual adjustments to the Brightness & Contrast values, the Auto Contrast feature is turned off automatically.

Note The Auto Contrast feature is available only for scanning black and white documents. If you are scanning in color mode with Color Detection selected, the Auto Contrast feature is available only for documents that Kofax VRS detects as black and white.

  1. Scan a test black and white image and open the VRS Interactive Viewer.
  2. On the Image Quality tab, in the Clarity group, click the Auto Contrast icon.
  3. Click the arrow next to Auto Contrast.
  4. Do one of the following to set the Contrast Sensitivity level:
    • Move the slider toward Low to reduce sensitivity to subtle differences in shading.

    • Move the slider toward the midpoint to apply moderate processing.

    • Move the slider toward High to increase sensitivity to subtle differences in shading.

    • Click in the Contrast Sensitivity box and enter a value.

The default Contrast Sensitivity setting is appropriate for most document types. If you change the setting, it persists until you change it again or apply a profile that uses a different setting.

  5. Select the Intelligent Cleanup check box to apply automatic correction of excessive noise on the image, or to remove the background on the image (such as the security background on a check).
  6. Do one of the following to set the Noise Sensitivity level:
    • Move the slider toward Low to apply minimal noise correction.

    • Move the slider toward the midpoint to apply moderate noise correction.

    • Move the slider toward High to apply maximum noise correction.

    • Click in the Noise Sensitivity box and enter a value.
