Applying Color Detection

Color detection (or automatic color detection) is the ability to detect and process a color image, or color content within an image. If a color document is detected, a color image is produced. If a non-color document is detected, a black and white image is produced. With this feature, you scan a batch that contains both color and black and white documents without having to presort them ahead of time.

When using automatic color detection, it is important to test your settings on a sample document that is similar to the documents you expect to scan. The adjustments that you make to the Sensitivity and the Small Object Sensitivity settings directly affect the outcome of the automatic color detection process.

Kofax VRS considers an image to be color if it meets one of the following conditions:

  • Overall color content is significant relative to the size of the image.

  • Overall color content, while not significant, is concentrated within one or more regions on the image.

If Detection is selected and neither of these conditions is met, the image is processed as black and white.

Kofax VRS supports additional color processing features for certain scanners through the Color panel on the Advanced Properties window. Use the Color panel to set up color-related features such as Color Dropout and JPEG Compression.

  1. On the Image Quality tab, in the Color group, click the Detection icon.
Note When using Kofax VRS with an ISIS-based scanning application, Detection is not available. Instead, you activate automatic color detection from the Main tab on the Kofax VRS ISIS interface. Once automatic color detection is active, switch to the Image Quality tab to select preferences for automatic color detection, as described here.
  2. Click the arrow under Detection.
  3. Select the Enable check box.
  4. Do one of the following to adjust the color Sensitivity setting:
    • Move the slider toward Low to decrease the likelihood of detecting a color document.

    • Move the slider toward High to increase the likelihood of detecting a color document.

    • Click in the Sensitivity box and enter a value.

  5. Select the Ignore Background Color icon to ignore the background color when the assessment of color content is performed. This setting is useful if the image content in the foreground is black and white, and color content exists only in the background.
  6. Select the Detect Small Color Object icon to recognize small, isolated color areas on images that are otherwise black and white.
  7. Use the Small Object Sensitivity setting to specify how sensitive you want Kofax VRS to be in identifying small amounts of color. Adjust the Small Object Sensitivity setting by doing one of the following:
    • Move the slider toward Low to decrease the likelihood of detecting small amounts of color.

    • Move the slider toward High to increase the likelihood of detecting small amounts of color.

    • Click in the Small Object Sensitivity box and enter a value.

  8. Adjust other settings or start scanning.
