Fixing Bad Scans with VRS QC Later

A Kofax Capture operator equipped with VRS QC Later can correct images without a scanner, provided the image is scanned with Kofax VRS in the VRS QC Later mode.

Kofax VRS can be set to operate in VRS QC Later mode. This separate feature is called VRS QC Later. To use VRS QC Later, the image must be scanned with Kofax VRS in the VRS QC Later mode. Do not confuse the VRS QC Later mode (which is part of Kofax VRS) with the VRS QC Later feature (which is part of Kofax Capture).

Kofax VRS is automatically installed with Kofax Capture. You can use VRS QC Later in your Kofax Capture workflow if all the following conditions are met.

  • You have the proper licenses.

  • A Kofax Capture module that supports scanning is running.

  • Your scanner supports the VRS QC Later mode.

If VRS QC Later in Kofax VRS is enabled, Kofax Capture automatically flags an image for VRS QC Later (in a page note) when a bad image is detected. Any Kofax Capture module that supports scanning can be used with VRS QC Later to adjust the image.

The VRS QC Later mode can be enabled by clicking the Kofax VRS icon in the system tray and selecting VRS QC Later from the menu. If the preceding conditions are not met, this selection is not available (it is either be unavailable or completely hidden, depending on the specific condition that is not met).

Once enabled, images scanned with Kofax VRS are examined for quality and rejected if not acceptable. Each rejected image is marked with a red 'X' and a page note explaining the rejection reason. Images are flagged as bad for any of the following reasons:

  • Brightness Out of Range (+/-)

  • Contrast Out of Range (+/-)

  • Color Confidence Too Low (%)

  • Auto Crop Failure - Page Info

  • Auto Deskew Failure

  • Auto Orientation Failure

Rejected images are typically sent to the Quality Control module. If VRS QC Later is selected from the Page menu, the VRS Interactive Viewer appears (provided the selected page is marked for VRS QC Later). At this point, you can make adjustments to the image, save, and finally unreject it.

If you exit the Kofax VRS window by clicking OK, the flag for VRS QC Later is removed from the image file, the image is unrejected, and the image viewer displays the corrected image. The page note is not cleared; Kofax Capture does not know if you have changed the page note or not.

Note that Kofax Capture is unaware of how the operator corrects the image. The master image is replaced by an image modified by Kofax VRS.

If the Partial Batch Export feature is enabled, the batch is processed by each module in the workflow, completed documents are exported and the batch is sent to Quality Control. Enabling VRS QC Later does not change the behavior of a partially exported batch.

It is also possible to enable VRS QC Later in the Scan module (from the Page menu), and fix bad images before they are sent to the next module in the Kofax Capture workflow. In this case, when the VRS Interactive Viewer appears, you can fix the image on the spot.

Modified Master Images

A master image is a scanned image that is unaltered by Kofax VRS. This is the image displayed in the VRS Interactive Viewer, and it is used as a starting point for adjustments. If the master image is modified outside Kofax VRS, you can no longer use the VRS QC Later feature to adjust it. When this happens, the VRS QC Later menu item is disabled, and a new page note informs you that VRS QC Later cannot be used. (Any existing notes are retained as a parenthetical insert within the new note.)

The following modifications disqualify an image for use with VRS QC Later:

  • Rotate. Rotating an image disqualifies it. This action does not remove the reject flag.

  • Replace. Replacing an image disqualifies it. This action clears the reject flag.

  • Optimized Custom Module API. Updating the image file disqualifies it. This action does not remove the reject flag.

  • Custom Module API. Updating the image file disqualifies it. This action does not remove the reject flag.

Furthermore, if you exit the VRS Interactive Viewer by clicking OK, the master image is regarded as modified, even if you made no adjustments. Consequently, that image can no longer be adjusted using the VRS QC Later feature. On the other hand, if you close the VRS Interactive Viewer by clicking Cancel, the image remains rejected and retains its unmodified status. This means you can return to it at another time and adjust it using VRS QC Later.

Scan Source

VRS QC Later is the name of a special scan source installed with Kofax Capture. This scan source must be present in order to use the feature; if it is missing, you may need to reinstall Kofax Capture. If you select VRS QC Later from the Page (or context) menu, Kofax Capture automatically selects the VRS QC Later source before opening the VRS Interactive Viewer.

This source remains selected for the rest of the session unless you manually change it. If you close and then reopen the module, the default scan source is selected.

Keep in mind that the entire Kofax Capture installation can use only one scan source at a time (unlike import sources, where more than one can be used at the same time). This means that if one module is using the VRS QC Later scan source, no other module can use it.
