Using Rubber Band OCR

Use the Rubber Band OCR feature to manually draw zones on an image and automatically populate index fields with data recognized within the zones. Configure Rubber Band OCR in the Administration module, and use it in the Validation and Verification modules.

The following scenarios illustrate when and why you would use this capability.

  • Index Zone with Auto Recognition: Auto recognition was assigned to an index zone in the Administration module and at data capture time, the intended and actual zone locations did not match. The data was not captured and the index field in the Validation module was either incorrect or not filled in. If you use Rubber Band OCR, it uses the recognition profile that was originally assigned to the index field.
  • Index Zone without Auto Recognition: Auto recognition was not assigned to an index zone in the Administration module and at data capture time, the data was captured and the index field in the Validation module was not filled in. If you then use Rubber Band OCR, it uses the recognition profile that was configured in the Batch Class Properties - Advanced tab.
  • Index Field with No Index Zone: An Index field was defined in the Administration module without an assigned index zone. If you then use Rubber Band OCR, it uses the recognition profile that was configured in the Batch Class Properties - Advanced tab.

Note Characters recognized by Rubber Band OCR are not included in keystroke count statistics.

You can configure a recognition profile for Rubber Band OCR by opening the Batch Class Properties window, clicking the Advanced tab, and selecting a profile from the Rubber Band OCR list.

  1. On the Home tab, in the Mode group, click Rubber Band OCR.
The page view switches to Rubber Band OCR mode and your cursor changes to a right angle shape.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Draw a rectangle around the area to use as the zone for the selected index field on the toolbar.
    • Single-click the top left corner of the first text character to capture for the selected index field on the toolbar.
    • Draw a rectangle around the area to use as the zone for the selected index field on the toolbar.
    • Single-click to the left of the top corner of the first character of text to capture for the selected index field on the toolbar.
Note When using the single-click method, if an index zone was defined with the field, the entire zone value is captured. If the text you want to capture does not have an associated index zone, only the first word to the right of the mouse click is captured.
The recognized value replaces the value in the index field.
  3. Select Pan or Zoom to exit Rubber Band mode.
