Applying Background Smoothing

Background Smoothing is used to convert an image background to a single color to improve readability and reduce the file size. The smoothed color represents an average of the detected background colors. This works well if the background colors have only minor variations. You can also convert the background color to white.

  1. On the Image Quality tab, in the Color group, click the Background Smoothing icon.
  2. Click the arrow next to Background Smoothing.
  3. Select the Enable check box.
  4. Do one of the following to set the level of background smoothing to apply:
    • Move the slider toward Minimum to decrease the level of background smoothing.

    • Move the slider toward Maximum to increase the level of background smoothing.

    • Click in the Smoothness box and enter a value.

  5. Select the Background Color to White icon to convert the background color to white. This helps minimize the file size, especially when the image content is more important than the background.
  6. Select the Snap to White icon to convert a nearly white background to all-white. This setting is not supported for all scanners.
  7. Adjust other settings or start scanning.
