Sticky Values

If an index field value is the same for multiple documents, you save time by applying the Sticky Value setting to make the value persist from one document to another. With "sticky" fields, the index field value is derived from manually entered data or from bar code data copied from the same field in the previous document. The value persists for subsequent documents until the data is overwritten or new bar code information is detected. The Sticky Value setting is appropriate if a unique default index field value is not specified, or if the default value contains one or more bar codes.

For example, you might use a sticky field to use the same supplier name for multiple invoice documents without having to retype the name repeatedly. In the first document in the batch, you either type the name during manual indexing, or you use a bar code to specify the supplier name. Once the first document is created, the supplier name is applied to the sticky field for all subsequent documents. The sticky value does not change unless another value is manually entered or the bar code is replaced.

The sticky value is either applied manually during indexing or, when used with bar codes, applied automatically upon creation of a document.

Other guidelines related to manual entry of sticky values:

  • When you paste a document that has been cut or copied, the sticky value is not refreshed as soon as you paste the document; the sticky value associated with the original document is retained. If the sticky value is empty, the value is copied from the previous document as soon as you switch to Indexing mode to validate the index values.
  • When you delete a document, the sticky values for subsequent documents are retained.
  • When you split a document, the newly created document inherits any sticky values associated with the original document.
