Configuring Bar Codes

Use the Bar Code Setup tab to configure bar codes for document separation or inclusion in index fields.

Kofax Express can read bar codes from the front or back of a page. If a bar code does not fit on the front of a page, you can place it on the back.

If you select bar code reading while the Raw image setting is set to Off on the Job Setup tab, the Raw image setting is changed automatically to Grayscale to optimize bar code accuracy.

If your index fields include bar codes, you may want to select Auto Rotate on the Scan Settings tab to ensure that the bar codes are read in the correct order.

  1. On the Bar Code Setup tab, do one of the following:
    • In the Separation group, click Type if you are configuring bar codes for document separation.

    • In the Index group, click Types if you are configuring bar codes for inclusion in index fields.

  2. Select one or more bar code types on the list (only one bar code type can be selected for document separation).

Kofax Express will require the bar code types that you select and ignore the other types. The availability of some bar code types may vary, according to their compatibility with other bar codes that you select. For example, the Interleaved 2 of 5 bar code is not compatible with some other bar code types. If you select Interleaved 2 of 5, some other bar code types may become unavailable.

Some bar codes may be unavailable on the list in the Separation group if they are not compatible with a bar code selected on the list in the Index group.

  3. In the Filters group, apply the following settings to filter out unwanted bar codes:
    • Select the Checksum check box to enable checksum verification, which is available for the Codabar, Code 39, and Interleaved 2 of 5 bar code types. The checksum, usually the last character in the bar code, is used to validate the characters that precede it in the bar code. It is not included as part of the bar code data. If you select Checksum, any Codabar, Code 39, or Interleaved 2 of 5 bar code that does not pass the checksum is not read.

    • Minimum Length: Select the minimum number of characters (including spaces or special characters such as hyphens) that must be detected for a bar code to be considered valid. Any bar code that does not meet the minimum length requirement is not read.

    • Format: Filter out bar codes that should not be read by clicking the setup tool to select from a list of predefined bar code value formats. To be considered valid, the value for each detected bar code must match the specified format. Any bar code that does not match the format is discarded.

  4. Do one of the following:
    • If you are configuring bar codes for document separation, apply the applicable Document Separation settings on the Job Setup tab.

    • If you are configuring bar codes for inclusion in index fields, use the Default field on the Index Setup tab to link an index field to one or more bar codes (listed as {BarCode1}, {BarCode2}, {BarCode3}, etc.). Use the On Page setting to indicate the page on which the index field with a bar code appears.
