Scan Profiles - Overview

A scan profile is a saved combination of scanner and Kofax VRS settings that are applied to images during a scan operation. The profile settings are based on (and optimized for) the currently connected scanner, as well as the selections on the Scan Settings tab.

Kofax Express comes with a set of predefined scan profiles that provide excellent image quality for a wide range of document types. Each time you connect to a scanner, the predefined scan profiles are updated with the appropriate settings.

In a Kofax Express client/server installation, an administrator can share scan profiles created on any workstation and make them available to other users. This is accomplished by publishing the scan profiles to send them to the central repository that is accessible to other Kofax Express workstations. The most current published scan profiles are also downloaded automatically when a user selects a scanner for use with Kofax Express. Scan profiles are downloaded only if they apply to the scanner being used on the user's workstation.

Shared scan profiles are listed with an S character <S> next to their names. Once a shared scan profile is edited and saved, the <S> designation is removed from the name.

Scan profiles are not saved with job settings. To associate a scan profile with a job, use the Associated Scan Profile feature on the Job Setup tab.

Predefined scan profiles:

  • Default: This profile has the following Kofax VRS settings selected: Deskew, Auto Crop, Edge Cleanup, and Auto Brightness. The settings for Brightness, Contrast, and Gamma are automatically adjusted for optimal image quality, according to the selected scanner. Although you can use the Default profile to scan in black and white or color, the settings are best-suited for black and white documents.
  • Automatic: This profile includes the same Kofax VRS settings as the Default profile, along with Hole Punch Removal, Blank Page Deletion, Auto Rotate, Auto Brightness, and Advanced Clarity. The settings for Brightness, Contrast, and Gamma are automatically adjusted for optimal image quality, according to the selected scanner. The Automatic profile is optimized to ensure the best possible image quality for black and white documents on high performance computers.
  • Color: Intended for scanning in color mode, this profile includes the same Kofax VRS settings as the Default profile, along with Hole Punch Removal, Blank Page Deletion, and Auto Rotate. With the Color profile, Detect Color and Background Smoothing are also available.
  • Network Scanner: Similar to Automatic, without Hole Punch Removal, Auto Crop, and Edge Cleanup.

Create additional profiles if necessary. Some documents, such as receipts printed on thin or delicate paper, may require a custom profile to achieve optimal image quality results.

The active profile is listed on the Scan Profile toolbar below the Ribbon.

If you delete the predefined scan profiles in error, restore them by using the Restore Panel settings in the Options window.
