Advanced Properties - Multifeed - Kodak Scanners

Use the Multifeed panel to set preferences associated with multifeed detection.

Multifeed Action

In the Multifeed Action group, select Enable to turn on multifeed detection. When selected, the scanner detects multifeed errors and responds according to the action that you set on the Administration Console Exceptions panel.

If the Multifeed error action is set to Auto Resolve on the Exceptions panel, use the Multifeed Action list to select one of the following scanner responses:

  • Pause and generate image: Pauses the scan operation and produces an image. The affected pages are ejected from the scanner. Use the scanner front panel to resume scanning and select additional options:

Omit Multifeed: Skips multifeed detection for the next page scanned.

Omit Print: Skips printing for the next page scanned.

  • Pause and hold paper at exit: Pauses the scan operation and holds the page in the paper path.

  • Pause and hold paper: Pauses the scan operation and attempts to hold the affected pages in the paper path. After clearing the paper path, use the scanner front panel to resume scanning and optionally select Omit Multifeed or Omit Print, as described previously.

  • Stop and hold paper: Stops the scan operation and attempts to hold the affected pages in the paper path. After clearing the paper path, use the scanner front panel to resume scanning.

  • Stop and eject paper: Stops the scan operation and ejects the affected pages from the scanner. Use the scanner front panel to resume scanning.

  • Stop and hold paper at exit: Stops the scan operation and holds the page in the paper path.

  • Beep and continue: Continues the scan operation without interruption. If the scanner is set to sound an audible alert, it sounds when the multifeed condition is detected.

If the Multifeed error action is set to Return Error or Intervention on the Exceptions panel, the responses to a multifeed condition are as follows:

  • Return Error: If the Multifeed Action above is any setting other than "Beep and continue," the scan operation is stopped, any images are deleted, and a "Multifeed detected" error is sent to the scan application without displaying a multifeed error message. In this case, you cannot resume scanning and the paper path must be cleared before you start another batch. However, if the Multifeed Action above is set to "Beep and continue," the scan operation is not stopped; it continues without interruption except for the audible alert.

  • Intervention: If the Multifeed Action above is any setting other than "Beep and continue," the scan operation is stopped, the affected pages are ejected from the scanner, and an image appears in the multifeed image viewer. Then you are prompted to accept the image or rescan the page. If the Multifeed Action is set to "Beep and continue," the scan operation is not stopped; it continues without interruption except for the audible alert.

Ultrasonic Sensitivity

When using the scanner sensors for multifeed detection, use the settings in the Ultrasonic Sensitivity group to adjust the level of sensitivity for the sensors. With a low setting, some multifeed pages may go undetected. With a high setting, some pages may be reported falsely as multifeed pages.

For details about the scanner sensors, see your Kodak scanner documentation.

Sensors

The scanner includes five sensors (arranged from left to right) for detecting multifeed conditions. Each sensor detects multifeeds that occur within its range, which spans the length of a page as it passes by the sensor.

For each sensor that you select, you can also specify a document size to be ignored during multifeed detection. For example, if a note with a length of 3 inches is affixed to the top left corner of a page, it would normally produce a multifeed error. To avoid the error, you could select the Ignore Length check box for the leftmost sensor. Then, in the "Ignore up to" box, set a measurement such as 3 inches. As a result, a multifeed error would not be reported when a document (such as the note) with a length up to 3 inches is detected by the leftmost sensor.

The Ignore Length feature gives you the ability to keep a sensor turned on without producing unwanted multifeed errors when documents such as notes are scanned.

If Ignore Length is not selected for any sensor, the entire page is considered in the multifeed detection process.

Document Length

In the Document Length group, select Enable to analyze the length of each page in a batch to detect any page that exceeds a specified paper size. If such a page is detected, a multifeed condition is reported. To specify the paper size, you set an overlap length, which is added to the paper size selected in the scan application. For example, if you are scanning pages with a length of 11 inches and the overlap length is set to 2 inches, a multifeed condition is reported if a page exceeding 13 inches is detected.

This setting is appropriate for batches that are expected to consist of similar page sizes. You can base multifeed detection on the document length or the scanner sensors, or both.
