Scan Settings Tab

Before scanning a batch, use the Scan Settings tab to configure settings that are appropriate for the type of documents that you plan to scan. This tab includes settings for color mode, resolution, and paper size that are common to most scanners, as well as Kofax VRS settings such as Deskew, Auto Crop, and speckle removal that help achieve optimal image quality for any document type. Additional Kofax VRS settings such as Detect Color and Smoothing are available for documents that you scan in grayscale or color mode.

The controls that you see on the Scan Settings tab vary, according to the active selection (Scanner, VRS General, or VRS Color) in the Settings group. By default, the Scan Settings tab opens to the Scanner settings. Each time you select the Scan Settings tab, it displays the settings that were active the last time the tab was active.

Settings group
	Scanner	Displays basic settings related to the scanner.
	General	Displays Kofax VRS image quality adjustment settings for processing most black and white, grayscale, or color documents.
	Color	Displays Kofax VRS image quality adjustment settings for processing documents scanned in color (and some in grayscale).
Scan group
	Scan One	Scans a single page. If FolderScan is active, imports a single image from the specified folder.
	Scan All	Scans all pages in the scanner. If FolderScan is active, imports all images from the specified folder.
	Stop	Stops the scan or import operation.
	Black and White	Sets output color to black and white. The file size for a black and white image is considerably smaller than it is for grayscale or color images.
	Grayscale	Sets output color to grayscale. Compared to black and white, grayscale images usually result in slightly better quality at the cost of increased file sizes.
	Color	Sets output to color. When you scan in color, the file size usually increases (but compared to grayscale, only slightly).
Scanner - Detail group
	Resolution	Applies a dpi (dots per inch) setting to produce satisfactory image quality. Resolution is a measure of the image detail that the scanner can translate. The higher resolution settings support greater amounts of detail. Images scanned at high resolutions require more storage space than other images.
Scanner - Feeder group
	Flatbed	Scans a page from the scanner's flatbed. Useful for scanning thick or bound documents that cannot pass through the scanner, or for documents in fragile or poor condition.
	Feeder	Scans a page from the scanner's automatic document feeder (ADF). Useful for scanning stacks of loose pages of a similar type, or for documents in good condition.
Scanner - Sides group
	One Side	Scans one side of a document.
	Both Sides	Scans both sides of a document.
Scanner - Paper Size group
	Size	Sets the paper size of the documents to be scanned. Default setting is based on the region where you purchased the product. For example, the default paper size for the U.S. is Letter; in Europe, the default size is A4.
	Portrait	Sets the paper orientation to Portrait so that the short edge of the paper is fed first into the scanner.
	Landscape	Sets the paper orientation to Landscape so that the long edge of the paper is fed first into the scanner.
	Long Paper	Scans paper lengths that extend beyond the standard dimensions, including the maximum. Available only for certain high-volume, production class scanners.
Scanner - Rotation group
	Front	Applies a rotation setting to the front page.
	Back	Applies a rotation setting to the back page.
Scanner - Auto Resolve group
	Auto Resolve	Sets preferences for displaying the Auto Resolve window while scanning is in progress. Auto Resolve settings are saved with the job settings (not the scan profile settings).
Scanner - Scanner group
	Select	Opens the Select Scanner window where you select a scanner or FolderScan.
VRS General - Automatic Corrections group
	Deskew Edges	Automatically straightens images that are skewed by detecting the image edges.
	Deskew Content	Automatically straightens images that are skewed by detecting the image content.
	Auto Crop	Crops an image to the actual paper size scanned, rather than the paper size selection.
	Edge Cleanup	Trims the border of an image.
	Edge Fill	Automatically repairs edges, such as folded corners or jagged edges.
	Hole Punch Removal	Fills punch hole marks with the background color of the area surrounding the marks. Useful for images with hole punch marks or other hole marks near the edge of the page. This feature works best with black background scanners.
	Delete Blank	Automatically removes pages that are confidently determined to be blank. Confidence level is based on the Content Sensitivity setting.
	Content Sensitivity	Adjusts the level of sensitivity to content on a page. With a low setting (such as Very Noisy), a page with considerable content such as speckles is considered blank. As a result, such a page is deleted. Use the slider or the Content Sensitivity box to set the value.
	Ignore Hole Punches	Ignores hole punch marks when the assessment of page "blankness" is performed.
	Auto Rotate	Automatically rotates images that are scanned in a non-standard (such as upside-down) orientation. Effective for images that contain text.
	Merge Sides	Combines front and back sides to produce a single image. Available only if duplex scanning is active (Both Sides must be selected in the Sides group).
VRS General - Clarity group
	Brightness	Adjusts the brightness, which affects the amount of "light" on an image.
	Contrast	Adjusts the contrast, which affects the amount of difference between the lightest and darkest areas on an image.
	Gamma	Adjusts the conversion of light intensity into pixels; typically, you do not need to adjust the Gamma value.
	Auto Brightness	Automatically assigns an optimal value for brightness. Available only for black and white or grayscale images.
	Advanced Clarity	Applies special processing to challenging documents. Use the slider to set the level of special processing to apply to the image background. Available only for black and white images.
	Analyze Color	For pages with color background or text, produces optimal black and white images by including color content variations in the page evaluation. Otherwise, only grayscale variations are evaluated. Available only if Advanced Clarity is active.
	Ignore Pictures	Ignores pictures or photos when evaluating the page content. As a result, the clarity improvements are applied to other (non-picture) content on the page. Available only if Advanced Clarity is active.
VRS General - B & W Filters group
	Line Filter	Sets the level of thinning or thickening to apply to image elements (lines and text) on black and white images. Use the line filter to enhance image quality and improve legibility.
	Speckle Removal Filter	Sets the level of speckling to remove from black and white images.
	Halftone	Improves the appearance of pictures on black and white images.
VRS Color - Color Detection group
	Detect Color	Sets the scanner to automatically detect and process images according to the detected color mode (color or black and white).
	Detect Small Color Objects	Detects small amounts of color on images that are otherwise colorless.
	Color Content Sensitivity	Increases or decreases the likelihood of detecting color content.
	Small Color Area Sensitivity	Increases or decreases the likelihood of detecting small amounts of color content.
	Ignore Background Color	Ignores the background color when assessing whether a page is color or black and white.
VRS Color - Background group
	Smoothing	Converts color background to a single, smoothed color.
	Smoothing Slider	Increases or decreases the level of smoothing applied to the image background.
	Snap to White	Converts background to white, or to a smoothed color. Not available for all scanners.
	Background Color to White	Converts background color to white.
Reset group
	Original Settings	Restores all values on the Scan Settings tab to the state that was in effect the last time you selected a profile or scanned a page, whichever is more recent.
