About configuring services

The Administration Console enables you to configure and administer Managers, Connectors, Services, and scanning devices. You can create profiles for a service and associate them with Connector profiles. When you scan a document using a Connector with an associated service, the document is scanned, processed by the service, and then passed to the Connector workflow.

Document services

Document services are image and document processing add-ons. Document service is a type of Connector with an exception that this component does not send the documents to any destination. Document Services are used for:

  • Enhanced Image Cleanup (punch hole removal, black border removal, and so on)
  • Indexing
  • Batching based on Barcode
  • Document Building

Document service is a 'Post Scan/Pre-Connector' component (always called/executed after scanning is done and after all the services are displayed, but before calling the Connector.

The Document service operations are always performed before the first connector screen is displayed (if there is any), even if the connector profile is configured as background.

Order of Operation

The execution order/sequence of the Document Service profiles can be modified in the Order of Operation dialog. To launch it, expand Services > Connector Services in the Settings pane of the Administration Console.

In this document, the term Document Service has the same meaning as the term Extender.

You can drag the various document service profiles to change the order of their execution. The Scanning with Preview SCREEN shown/not shown item cannot be moved, it only represents a point where the scanning phase finishes, therefore the document services after this line will be able to process the scanned images.

Since only Lookup Extender and Healthcare Extender profiles can be moved before the Preview Screen shown/not shown item, a red dividing line with Invalid text appears in case you try to drag and drop a non-Lookup/non-Healthcare profile before the Preview Screen shown/not shown item. Such operations do not take effect, the non-Lookup/non-Healthcare profile remains in its original place.

By positioning a Lookup Extender profile before the scanning phase in the Order of Operation dialog, one can configure the workflow in a way that the Lookup Extender forms are displayed before/during scanning.

This is useful only in such cases when the Lookup Extender profile is used to collect data from the user (and optionally making lookups based on the entered information). Since the scanned pages will be available only in a later phase of the workflow, this pre-scan positioned Lookup Extender profile will not be able to do any lookup on the data extracted from the scanned pages (by barcode reading or zonal OCR with FPE or Smart Forms Extender). Lookup Extender profiles performing such lookups or profiles set up with recognized data validation screens must be positioned after the scanning phase.
