Scanning settings

This topic describes scanning settings that are available for HP devices in the Unified Client Capture component.

These settings are configured on the General tab in the form settings. Select the Allow Changes check box next to any option to allow users to change the setting on the device console. The available options depend on the device type.

Setting Description
File Type Indicates the type of file to save scanned data. The following file types are supported:
  • PDF — Saves to PDF format.
  • PDF/A — Saves to PDF/A format.
  • Searchable PDF— Saves to searchable PDF format.
  • Searchable PDF/A— Saves to searchable PDF/A format.
  • JPEG — A file format widely used in digital cameras. Suitable for saving photo data. This type does not support saving of multiple pages into one file.
  • TIFF — Specifies TIFF format.
  • MTIFF  —  Specifies MTIFF format.
  • XPS — Specifies XPS format.
  • Text (OCR) — Saves the file as an unformatted, ASCII-encoded text file with a .txt extension.
  • Unicode Text (OCR) — Saves the file as a text-only Unicode file with a .txt extension.
  • Unicode Text (OCR) — Saves the file as a text-only Unicode file with a .txt extension.
  • HTML (OCR) — Saves the file as a Web page of the scan, with a .zip extension.
  • CSV (OCR) — Saves the file as a comma separated value (CSV) text file.
Color/Black Indicates whether to scan the original in color or black and white mode:
  • Auto — Auto color/gray detection for scanning.
  • Black — Scan in black and white with a compressed file size.
  • Color — Scan text and photos in full color, regardless of whether the original is in color or in black.
  • Black/Gray — Scan in black and white.
Original Sides Indicates if the document has one or two sides:
  • 1-sided
  • 2-sided
Booklet Format Arranges the two or more pages of a scanned document onto the front and back of one sheet of paper:
  • Book-style
  • Flip-style
Resolution Indicates the scanning resolution:
  • 75 dpi — Select this option to scan the lowest resolution.
  • 150 dpi — Select this option to scan a lower resolution.
  • 200 dpi — Select this option to scan a standard original.
  • 300 dpi — Select this option to scan a standard original with higher resolution.
  • 400 dpi — Select this option to scan an original containing small characters and drawings.
  • 600 dpi — Select this option to convert an original into a file of the maximum size. This option is available when scanning an original such as a full-color photo, which requires a fine level of image.

Content Orientation Indicates the paper orientation of the scanned document.

Original Size

Indicates the size of paper being scanned.

Prompt for additional pages Scan documents with more than one page, or more than page size, and combine them into a single document:
  • On
  • Off
OCR Language Allows you select the language of the text you want to edit on a scanned document.
Heavy Originals Indicates if you are using heavy-weight paper:

  • Heavy
  • Normal

Optimize Text/Picture

Optimizes the output for text or image:

  • Text —  Use this option for document that are text-based or mostly text.
  • Mixed —  Manually optimize the setting for each document.
  • Printed picture —  Use this option drawings or images from books or magazines.
  • Photograph —  Use this setting for photographic prints.

Darkness

Specifies if the scan has a dark or light tone. Choose the appropriate darkness from 0-8.

Contrast Adjust the contrast between black and white in the scan. Choose the appropriate contrast from 0-8.
Sharpness

Choose the appropriate sharpness from 0-4.

Background Cleanup

Lightens the background to increase visibility of a faint image. Choose the appropriate level from 0-8.

Image Preview

Indicates if you want to preview an image before scanning:

  • On
  • Off

Misfeed Detection Detects when multiple pages are fed simultaneously into the scanner and stops the scanning job:
  • On
  • Off
Auto Crop

Crops scanned documents when needed:

  • Do Not Crop —  This option does not crop the scanned document.
  • Crop To Paper —  This option crops the image or paper to the media size. Blank images are not cropped.
  • Crop To Content —  This option removes white space from all sides of scanned images. Blank images are not cropped.

Blank Page Suppression

Removes blank pages from scanned documents:

  • Off
  • On

Specifies the source of the document:

  • Automatic
  • Document feeder
