Dimension manager

Dimensions, or fields, are key elements in the records, metrics, and translation tables used to build a dashboard. Typically, each dimension must have the same ID and type assigned to it across its data source and inherited documents; inconsistent dimension ID or type assignments cause errors during the load to the data mart or the dashboard. Insight collects the dimensions from the following documents: records, standard metrics, translation tables, and processes. Fixed translation table dimensions, such as Item ID and Name, are not collected.

You can use the Dimension manager to view all existing dimensions for a project and define its properties.

  1. On the Toolbar, select Tools > Dimension manager.

All dimensions are listed in a grid on the Dimension manager editor. For each dimension, the editor contains the following properties: ID, Display Name, Type, Length, Filter, and Translation Table. The warning icon indicates that a dimension property has several values assigned to it. The first row is empty, you can use it for filtering. Start typing the value of the required property, and the Dimension manager offers you the matches.

  2. In the Dimension manager editor, click in the row of the dimension to edit.
  3. Click the ellipsis button to open the Dimension details screen.
  4. To enter or edit the value for a dimension property, select the check box next to the applicable dimension.

Property Panel is enabled and the dimension properties are listed on the right.

When a dimension is selected, all inherited dimensions are also selected automatically.
  5. Define the dimension properties in the Property Panel.
  6. Click Apply to apply the changes.
If you use Change ID to change a dimension ID, the applicable dimension is removed from the Dimension details grid and appears on the list of dimensions with a new ID.
  7. Click Close to exit the Dimension details screen.
