Define data sources

A Data source definition stores the configuration information for how Insight should connect to a specific data source. The information includes the data source type, connection type, and login credentials.

Studio can connect to a variety of data sources, including relational databases, flat files, web services, and Excel.

  1. Perform one of the following steps:
    • On the Guide in the main panel, click Add new data source.

    • On the Documents Tree, right-click Data Sources and select New Data source.

  2. Assign a name to the data source and click OK.
  3. On the Database type menu, select the applicable database type. If your database is not on the list, select Others and then enter the Provider Information such as ODBC, OleDb, or DSN. For the SAP BW database type, see SAP BW database type.
  4. On the Provider name list, select the applicable connection type for the database selected in the previous step.
  5. Based on the selected database type, one of the following fields appears on the screen. Fill in the field accordingly.
    • Server Name

    • DSN

    • File

    • URL

    • TNS Name

  6. Fill in the Database Name field if the field is available as a result of selections in the previous steps.
  7. If applicable, enter the user name and password for the database specified in the previous step.

For MSSQL, You can select Windows Authentication instead of a user name and password. To do so, configure the Insight Windows services and IIS services with a user name and password with appropriate privileges.

  8. Click Connect to run a test connection to ensure that Studio can connect to the database. If a connection is established, the circular indicator turns green.
  9. On the Actions toolbar, be sure to save the datasource.
Analysis Services and SAP BW databases can only be used for MDX metrics.

Use case insensitive filtering and sorting

To apply case insensitive filtering and sorting for records and metrics, perform the following procedure.

  1. On the Documents Tree > Data sources section, select your Oracle-based Data database connection.
  2. On the Property Panel, select the Use case insensitive option.
  3. Save the connection.

If you require to perform a case insensitive search for an Oracle-based Data database connection after stored records and metrics are lined up, you should follow the above procedure and click Publish on the Tools toolbar. After you click Publish, case insensitive indexes are created in the Data database, and Insight uses them when the queries are executed.

To disable the case insensitive search, clear the Use case insensitive check box for the required Data database and click Publish again.
