User role (non-Administrator role)

This user role requires that rights are explicitly assigned. Every time a new object is created, the rights need to be modified for this role if the user needs to access this new object.

  1. On the Documents Tree, right-click Roles and click New User Role.

    The New Role window appears.

  2. Type a name for the new role and click OK.

The Role settings appear in the right pane.

  3. Define a Theme and Tablet Theme for the role. Select a theme from the list.
  4. In the Application rights tab, select which Insight components to access from this role. Options include Admin Console, Themes and Formats, Data Loader, and Studio.
  5. On the View Rights tab, select which project and which portion of each project to be viewable by this role.

Click each project to expand each into subparts.

  6. On the Studio rights tab, select editing options to allow.

If View rights is the only option selected for the documents (records, metrics, views, execution plans, or other), the user is only allowed to view the document. If you select Studio rights, the user can view and change the document.

  7. In the Special rights tab, select which actions the role can perform with files. Possible options include:
    • Can upload files. Select this check box to permit the user with this role to perform any actions based on uploading files, such as create a record, a data source on a file, or upload geo shapes.

    • Can select files from the server. Select this check box to permit the user with this role to use files from the server. If you clear this check box, but Can upload files is selected, when attempting to upload a file, you are immediately directed to browse the directory on your computer, without an option of searching on the server.

    • Can import project. Select this check box to allow the user to import projects or upload geo shapes.

    • Can upload from the Viewer. Select this check box if you want the end user to upload Excel source files directly from the Viewer. If this permission exists, the user can browse for the required file on the computer and upload it.

    • Show exception message. Select this check box to permit the user with this role to see an exception message, such as an SQL exception message.

    • Can download log files. Select this check box to permit the user with this role to download log files. If the right is granted to a user, the Download Logs button is available for the user on the Tools toolbar.

  8. Select options on the Themes tab to allow or restrict themes for the user. The dashboard designer may edit styles for all the selected themes in the Themes and Formats or Studio application (via the Property Panel). See the Kofax Insight Studio Help for more information.
  9. Use the Fixed values mapping tab to define mapping rules for each role. This is typically the Active Directory memberOf property.

Each row in the mapping grid uses the AND operand. If more than one role listed matches conditions for a user account, the access rights are merged from all matching roles, while other settings (theme, date format, and other) are assigned by the top matching role in the list.

  10. Use the External DB mapping tab to map a database type to the role. See Authentication for details.
  11. In the Insight Users tab, click Administrator to define this user as an administrator.
  12. Select options on the Markers tab to allow full customization of the role by creating markers throughout Insight. See Markers.
