Server Logging Reports

For actions that are performed for a stand-alone Search and Matching Server (for example, when a new database is added) or a Load Balancer (for example, when a server is added to the cluster) log messages are created and written to a log file on the computer that runs the server. The log file is archived regularly so that its size cannot become too large. To be able to look up older messages a defined number of archive files is kept. The log files for a server are stored on the computer that runs the Search and Matching Server or Load Balancer. You can display the last 100 messages from the log file in the Kofax Search and Matching Server Administration on the Server Logging Report tab.

If you connect to a load balancer the Server Logging report tab is used to display the messages from the load balancer log file as well as those from each server that belongs to the load balancer cluster.

There are different categories of messages (log levels) and each message shows a prefix to indicate to which category it belongs.

INFO

Logs information, for example which databases are loaded into memory when the Kofax Search and Matching Server is started or when a database is deleted, successfully renamed, successfully imported or automatically updated.

WARN

Logs warnings, for example when a search request returns an error; during a database import logs the number of records that cannot be imported (note that the first three records for which the import failed are listed as warning, others are logged as information); or when a temporarily stored upload file cannot be deleted.

ERROR

Logs an error, for example, errors that occur during a database import and update; or when a database URL/UNC path is no longer accessible.

Important Errors that occur while using Kofax Search and Matching Server Administration, for example, when you try to rename a database that is still activated or when you try to delete a database that is already deleted by another Administration user, are not written to the log file. Instead an error message is displayed within the application.

Configuration files are available to configure how logging works for both the Search and Matching Server service and the Load Balancer. This includes the default settings for the logging level, the path where the log file is stored and how it is archived. For the best results, use the default settings.
