Creating and using log windows

All log messages received by the Server Monitor will be displayed in all log windows currently open (subject to filtering). If you started the Server Monitor for the first time, the Monitor will open a log window for you.

You can use more than one log window and selectively display incoming messages in one window or another. Thus, you can group messages together by severity, category, source, or any other message characteristic, or opt to only view messages that are important to you. To do this, you can apply a filter to each window. All messages are sent to all log windows, but only the messages that match the filter criteria will be displayed in the specific window. See Using filters.

Messages are displayed top down (the newest one is on the top). Only a specified number of messages (default 2048) are kept in a window and can be scrolled. The maximum number of messages can be configured in the properties file.

Creating and using log windows

You can create a new log window by:

Selecting Log > New log window from the menu.

Clicking the New log window button on the toolbar.

Right clicking inside an existing log window and selecting New log window from the popup menu.

Closing a log window

You can close a log window by:

Click the Close control in the window title bar.

Selecting Window > Close window from the menu.

Right clicking inside the log window and selecting Close window from the popup menu.

Resizing a log window

You can resize a log window the way you resize any other window: click on the border or one of the corners and drag it with the mouse.

Windows can also be minimized and maximized. They retain their position and state if you save your settings, or if autosave is enabled.

Arranging windows

You can arrange windows in your monitor by:

Selecting Window > Tile windows from the menu.

Pressing the Tile windows button on the toolbar.

Right clicking inside the window and selecting Tile windows from the popup menu.

Windows will be resized and arranged evenly across the right side of your monitor.

Pausing a log window

As long as logging is enabled, the Server Monitor will receive log messages from the enabled computers and display them in the log windows. If message traffic is high, some log lines you are interested in can easily scroll off your window before you manage to read them. To prevent this, you can pause the display in a window. To do this you can use one of the following:

Select Log > Pause log from the menu.

Press the Pause log button on the toolbar.

Right click in the window and select Pause log from the popup menu.

If a window is paused, the Pause log menu entry will display a check mark and the word ‘Paused’ will be displayed in the title bar.

You can continue display of log messages by proceeding the same way. All messages that have been received while the window was paused will now be displayed.

Viewing additional error information

All non-diagnostic messages (severity ‘D’, ‘C’, ‘E’ or ‘I’) have a unique message identifier. You can double click on the message, or right click and select Error message information from the popup menu. A help window with the description of that error will be shown. This only works for messages that contain a message identifier.

See Verifying the log.
