Advanced scanner settings: Kofax settings

You can change scanner settings, apply image filters, and change the way invoices are displayed on your screen. These adjustments can be made at numerous points in the Kofax ReadSoft Invoices dialogs. See Scanner settings and filtering operations for an overview.

Please see the manual supplied with your Kofax scanner card for additional information about how to use the functions described here. Study the manual for your scanner, as well, before changing any of the settings. Not all settings apply to all scanner models.

To access the advanced scanner settings, click Advanced in the Scanner settings dialog. The Kofax settings dialog is displayed if you are using an Adrenaline card with a Kofax driver. The ISIS scanner settings dialog is displayed if you are using any other connection and an ISIS driver.

Click Default at any time to reset to the standard settings.

Note If you change any of these settings, interpretation rates can decrease, as well as increase. Test the changes thoroughly before going into production.
Kofax scanner card settings
Smooth Activates a filter that smooths characters and lines. This option may increase legibility, and it may increase OCR accuracy. It usually reduces file sizes by 10 to 15%.
Smooth and clean Activates a filter that smooths characters, removes background noise and may eliminate some lines, so use with care. Black pixels that cannot be considered part of at least a 2 x 2 block of black pixels are set to white. This option may increase legibility, and it may increase OCR accuracy. It usually reduces file sizes by 10 to 15%. This option is faster than Thin plus Light thicken, but is has the same effect. Good to use with Remove noise (see below).
Smooth, clean, and preserve Identical to Smooth and clean, except that it preserves horizontal and vertical black line segments that are one pixel wide.
Deskew image Images that are skewed by 1 to 12 degrees are deskewed and then saved so that the image is straight. This option may reduce scanning speed.
Note Kofax ReadSoft Invoices has its own deskewing function, which makes this setting usually unnecessary. If you are having skew problems, you can try deactivating the Kofax ReadSoft Invoices deskewing by setting the SoftwareDeskew setting in Eilocal.ini to 0 and using this Kofax deskewing, instead. See INI file help for more information.
Fill lines Activates a filter that fills in and smooths lines, so use with care. May merge parallel lines that are close together. This option may increase legibility. It may also increase file sizes.
Fill lines and preserve Identical to Fill lines, except that it preserves horizontal and vertical white line segments that are at least one pixel wide.
Thicken Activates a filter that thickens characters and lines and may exaggerate background noise, so use with care. Good for dot matrix characters or for enhancing fax images (for thin or light elements in the image). This option may increase file sizes. This option may result in better images if used with Remove noise (see below).
Light thicken Similar to Thicken, but less aggressive.
Thin Activates a filter that thins characters and lines and may remove background noise, so use with care. Use on images where the elements are ballooned or blended together. Good for character separation, if characters are very close together. This option may reduce file sizes.
Scan long paper Only available with certain scanners, such as some Fujitsu and Böwe Bell + Howell scanners. When this option is selected, page lengths are not checked, and images of shorter pages than specified are not padded with white space to their specified length. This means that you can scan pages that are longer (or shorter) than the size specified by the invoice definition.

As of the time of this Help file, the maximum page length that has been tested is 60 cm. Additional information may be available from ReadSoft.

Remove black borders Select this option to remove black borders automatically. Then choose a maximum width (in pixels) of white noise inside black borders. White space wider than this value indicates that the border has stopped.
Remove streaks Select this option to remove thin horizontal streaks (black lines) automatically. Then choose a maximum width (in pixels) of streaks to remove. One or two pixels is recommended. Setting the width too high could remove important data from the image.
Remove noise Select this option to remove noise automatically. Then choose the maximum size of the noise to be removed. Note that many scanners themselves have their own such function – see Remove noise in Kodak (ATP) scanner settings or Fujitsu (IPC) scanner settings.
Miscellaneous settings (common to all Kofax scanners)
Scan time out (seconds) Specify how long you want the scanner to wait before reporting that the document feeder is empty.
Buffering (no. of pages) If you are using a Kofax card (and any scanner), you can specify the extent to which buffering is used. Normally you should choose 3 pages for maximum performance. Increasing the value above 3 may result in faster scanning, but the disadvantage is reduced control during the scanning process.
Panel controlled When you select this option, settings you make on the scanner’s control panel override conflicting settings made from Kofax ReadSoft Invoices.

Scanner-specific settings

Access scanner-specific settings by clicking the IPC, ATP, or ACE button at the bottom of the Kofax scanner settings dialog. (The name of the button changes, depending on which scanner you are using.) For more information, see:
