Troubleshooting for PDF Create

I do not see any controls in my PDF viewer

Check Document Settings. You may have specified Hide Menu Bar, Hide Toolbar or Hide Window Controls.

I see unwanted text or pictures in the background or foreground

Check that a watermark is not enabled by mistake.

I see jumbled text or pictures on the page, with items on top of each other

Check that overlay was not used during PDF creation. If it was used intentionally, check that the chosen files have content suitable for the overlay.

My PDF viewer will not open the PDF

Check that the PDF version is suitable for your PDF viewer. For instance:

Versions up to 1.3  can be opened by version 4 of Adobe Acrobat.

Versions up to 1.4 can be opened by version 5 of Adobe Acrobat

Versions up to 1.5 can be opened by version 6 of Adobe Acrobat.

Versions up to 1.6 can be opened by version 7 of Adobe Acrobat.

Versions up to 1.7 can be opened by version 8 of Adobe Acrobat.

Version PDF/A can be opened by version 5 of Adobe Acrobat or higher.

Pictures have disappeared from the PDF

Check the compression setting. The automatic setting must be 5 or above for pictures to appear.

Pictures do not print well

Check compression settings. Increase the resolution settings or raise the automatic setting so that it is above 50. Screen display can tolerate lower resolutions and higher compression, but for good-quality printing you should reduce the compression. If you enable MRC compression without using its profile, set the other compression setting to lossless.

Background color is not transferred from Word documents

PDF Create cannot detect a full-page colored background that was set in Word. Remove the background color from a copy of the document, draw a full-page rectangle, set the desired color and make transparency 100%. This allows the coloring to appear in the PDF.

PDF creation fails

You must have a print-enabled application on your system that can handle the source file and that is associated with it.

Wrong Paper Size or Orientation, or Missing Worksheets

If these errors appear, please open the files explicitly with the application that created them or that can open them properly, adjust the paper size, orientation, and other printing settings as required. Then use the File menu item Print to create the PDF file, choosing Kofax PDF as your printer. After converting files to PDF correctly in this way, you can use the Assistant to combine them.

Because MS Office applications control these settings themselves, printer settings are ignored in these cases. This means that for example an A4 size PDF file will be generated from an A4 size Word document, independently from the current printer settings.

Files Cannot be Added to List

Some files could be rejected by PDF Create because they do not have an associated program for printing. You should associate the file with a more suitable application (preferably the one that created the file), first installing the application if necessary.

For further guidance, please consult the Release Notes file or the Kofax web site.

You cannot see the Kofax PDF ribbon in an Office application (Word, Excel, Outlook or PowerPoint)

Check that add-ins in the Office applications are enabled.

To check enabling/disabling Add-ins in Office applications

In an Office  application, choose File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Add-ins and check that the Disable all Application Add-ins check box is turned off.

For more information on Add-ins, consult the relevant Microsoft Office Help topic: Home > Security and privacy > Enable or disable add-ins in Office programs >  View or change the add-in security settings.

A Kofax PDF Add-in has been disabled because of an exceptional running error

Re-enable an Add-in go to File > Options > Add-Ins in an Office application. At the bottom of the panel, select Disabled Items from the Manage selection box and click the Go button. Select an Add-in (PDF Create) you want to re-enable and click the Enable button. Then click Close and restart the Microsoft Office application.
