MAX files have long been the proprietary PaperPort image item format. This functionality has now been taken over by the universal PDF file type. In PaperPort 14, MAX files retain limited functionality: they are now read-only.
Flip through page thumbnails on the PaperPort desktop
View full-sized pages in Image View
View pre-existing annotations and item properties (subject, author, keywords)
Search on existing item properties or text generated by OCR
Copy MAX files to MAX or PDF
Run OCR to extract text
Delete MAX files
Import MAX files to PaperPort (also with Desktop Delivery in PaperPort Professional)
Export MAX files to a limited number of targets (e.g. E-mail, OmniPage)
MAX files can still be viewed by anyone with PaperPort.
Scan to MAX or create new MAX files
Enter new item properties beyond item names
Edit the page images using SET tools
Create new annotations or paste annotations from other files.

Insert or append pages
Kofax offers a Wizard-like program to convert MAX files to PDF. Find the MAX to PDF converter in the PaperPort sub-menu in the Windows Start menu. It can create PDF Image or PDF Searchable files by running OCR on text in the MAX file. The converter allows annotations to be transferred to the resulting PDF. Language choices are available separately for the MAX file content and for its annotations. The converter can automatically find all MAX files within your PaperPort folders.
