Protect knowledge bases

You can control the use of your knowledge bases by protecting them with a password. You may choose to do this if you share your knowledge base with other users.

You should select password protection when you create a knowledge base. An existing knowledge base can be password protected only if you recreate the knowledge base from the training set again. To enable a customer to use a password-protected knowledge base, create an activation code for the knowledge base. The customer needs to provide this activation code when the knowledge base is loaded into the project.

To receive an activation code for a knowledge base, a customer needs to provide the knowledge base owner with the serial number for his/her Kofax Capture hardware key or the software license. The knowledge base owner then uses either the Transformation Designer or Knowledge Base Administration to create an activation code for that Kofax serial number and return this activation code. Finally, the customer uses this code to unlock the knowledge base so that it can be used for production. Once a knowledge base is unlocked for a hardware key, it can be used for any number of projects.

For project development and testing purposes, customers can use a protected knowledge base in Transformation Designer or Knowledge Base Administration without restrictions. However, if they want to use a protected knowledge base during production, they need to obtain an activation code to unlock it.

You can protect a knowledge base in a project by following these steps:

  1. In the Project Tree window, select a class that has trainable locators.
  2. Optionally, view the class contents if they are not already displayed.

The hidden class contents are displayed.

  3. Select the desired locator in the Project Tree.

The Details window changes to display the relevant locator.

  4. In the Details window, right next to the locator method list, click Properties.

Alternatively, right-click the locator in the Project Tree, and then click Locator Properties.

The locator properties window is displayed.

  5. Select the Knowledge Base tab.
  6. Select the check box for the knowledge base you are protecting.
  7. Click Insert.

The Insert Knowledge Base Activation Code window is displayed.

  8. Type the Kofax serial number and the activation code.
  9. Click OK to activate the code.
