Properties of a Scan/VRS profile

Set the properties for a Scan/VRS profile.

Use the following tabs to configure the properties a Scan/VRS profile.

General

Name

Enter a name for the Scan/VRS profile, such as Customer Onboarding.

The name cannot be more than 50 characters.

Description

Optional. Enter a description for the profile, such as "Use this profile to scan documents related to Customer Onboarding."

The description cannot be more than 255 characters.

Paper size

Select one of the following preset paper sizes from the list.

Letter (8.5" x 11") (Default)

JIS B3 (364mm x 515mm)

Executive (10.5" x 7.25")

In addition to the preset sizes, the list includes the following options:

  • Custom: Use this option to specify the Long edge length or Short edge length in inches. (Default: 0 inches)

  • As scanned: Use this option to scan odd sized documents, such as receipts that may be captured from mobile devices.

    Note The Custom and As scanned options only apply to mobile device forms. If you set these options for other forms, the paper size falls back to the default size.

  • Maximum: Use this option to use the maximum paper size, so that the scanned images include documents in entirety, avoiding the risk of losing data because of the image being cutoff.

    Note MFP does not support the "Maximum" setting, or sets it to A3 paper size.

Orientation

Select the orientation to be Any (default), Portrait, or Landscape. If you select Any, the system can recognize the pages in either orientation.

Duplex

Select whether to scan the front side or both sides of the document:

  • Simplex (Default): Scans only the front side of the document.

  • Duplex: Scans both the sides of the document.

  • Automatic: Enables the scanner to automatically pick either mode.

Paper source

Select whether to scan individual or multiple pages:

  • Any (Default): Uses either paper source.

  • Flatbed: Individually scans each page. This option is convenient for a single page scanning.

  • ADF (Automatic Document Feeder): Scans multiple pages at a time; you need not place each individual page in the copier or scanner.

Resolution

Select the resolution to use. (Default: 300 dpi, minimum: 75dpi, maximum: 2400 dpi)

Color

Select a color mode for the scanned image.

Black and white

Sets output color to black and white. The file size for a black and white image is considerably smaller than it is for grayscale or color images.

Gray

Sets output color to grayscale. Compared to black and white, grayscale images usually result in slightly better quality at the cost of increased file sizes.

Color

Sets output to color. When you scan in color, the file size usually increases, but only slightly more than grayscale.

Automatic

With automatic color detection, TotalAgility determines if a scanned sheet is color or black and white, and processes the image accordingly. You need not separate color sheets from black and white sheets before scanning. This is only available when the Image enhancement settings is selected.

Black and white (enhanced)

With enhanced black and white, TotalAgility requests a color image from the scanner device and then uses EVRS internally to convert it to a higher quality black and white image.

Note Since the color images are requested from the scanner device, a larger amount of data has to be processed compared to normal black and white, and this can affect performance.

This option is only available when the Image enhancement settings is selected.

Note If you use "Black and white (Enhanced)" mode, or use "Color" and "Automatic" color modes in conjunction with image (eVRS) processing, we recommend that you do not use dpi higher than 600, as eVRS consumes high memory.

Image enhancement settings

If selected, enhances the image and automatically correct common scanning errors and then configure the following settings as needed:

  • Deskew: If selected, automatically straightens the image edges that are crooked while scanning. Kofax VRS performs the deskew by detecting the image edges or the image content. (Default: Clear)

  • Auto crop: If selected, automatically crops each image to the actual paper size scanned, instead of the currently selected paper size. You can only crop colored images and not the black and white images. (Default: Clear)

    Note The Auto crop option is only available if Deskew is selected.

  • Auto rotate: If selected, automatically rotates images produced when you scan documents that face in a non-standard (such as sideways or upside-down) direction as they pass through the scanner. Kofax VRS adjusts the rotation based on the detected orientation of the text content. (Default: Clear)

  • Delete blank page: If selected, automatically removes the blank pages from the document while scanning. (Default: Clear)

    Note If using VRS Elite to process an image during scan, do not select Image enhancement settings to avoid processing the image twice.

Allow runtime editing

To allow editing the Paper size, Duplex, Resolution, and Color for the MFP Scan forms (Scan create new job and Scan activity) at runtime, ensure that these settings are selected.

  • If a setting is restricted for editing at runtime, the setting is either disabled or removed on the MFP device to make sure that the setting specified by the Scan/VRS profile is used for scanning.

  • The resolution set on the Scan/VRS profile does not appear on an MFP device. If you set the resolution to 600 dpi on the Scan/VRS profile, the setting on the device is 400 dpi. This is because the Scan/VRS profile has resolution settings of 100, 200, 300, and 400 dpi, even though the device can support higher resolutions. Change the Resolution on the front panel before scanning the document.

Advanced

To disable image scaling and color conversion after eVRS processing so that unwanted side effects associated with these operations for images that were ingested from mobile devices can be avoided, configure the eVRS settings for the Scan/VRS profile.

Configure the eVRS settings

  1. Make sure the Image enhancement settings option on the General tab is selected.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. By default, the EVRS settings box is empty and does not show any eVRS command strings. Select EVRS settings only and click Save in the message.

    The following things happen:

    • The eVRS command strings for Resolution, Color, Deskew, Auto crop, Auto rotate and Delete blank page settings are automatically added to the EVRS settings box along with any eVRS command strings that were already present in the field.

    • The following settings on the General tab are no longer used for image processing, even if they are modified:

      • Deskew, Auto rotate, JPEG compression and Compression quality under Image enhancement settings are disabled.

      • The check boxes for Resolution and Color under Allow runtime editing are cleared. These settings are selected by default.

    • eVRS processes images only based on the command strings available in the EVRS Settings box, disregarding any eVRS-related settings on the General tab except for the Delete blank pages.

    • If you make any changes to the generated eVRS command strings manually, or if auto-generated command strings are modified or removed, the changes do not reflect in the General settings tab on saving the scan profile. Similarly, any changes to the settings on the General tab do not reflect the settings in the EVRS Settings box.

    • At runtime, in the Scan Client, all the image processing options are greyed out in the Scan settings screen.

    If you clear the check fox for EVRS settings only, all the eVRS command strings in the EVRS settings box are cleared.

  4. Additionally, enter the command strings in the EVRS settings box as needed. See eVRS command string modules.
  5. Click Save.

Change the sensitivity of a blank page

If you enable the "Image enhancement settings" and "Delete blank page" options on the General tab of a Scan/VRS profile, and scan a group of blank and non-blank pages, not all blank pages are removed or non-blank pages are removed correctly. To avoid this issue, you may need to increase or decrease the sensitivity of the blank page.

The following parameters control the detection of sensitivity of blank page:

  • CBlkPage.Min_Count_Edge.Int

  • CBlkPage.Min_Count_Black.Int

These two aspects of "non-blankness" are monitored for total number of "black" within a block and total number of "edges" defined as large enough transitions from one pixel to the next.

By default, MIN_COUNT_BLACK is 450 for 300 DPI, and is prorated for the area. For example, for 200 dpi it is 450 * 2/3 * 2/3 = 1800 / 9 = 200.

By default, MIN_COUNT_EDGE is 75 for 300 DPI and is also prorated based on the area.

As soon as either of these blocks goes beyond a threshold of black pixels or edges, the page is considered non-blank. You can set these thresholds to control the sensitivity of blank pages.

  1. Click the Advanced tab of Scan/VRS profile.
  2. Select EVRS settings only.
  3. In the EVRS settings field, enter the following strings: _LoadSetting_<PropertyName="CBlkPage.Min_Count_Edge.Int" Value="300" Comment="DEFAULT 75" /> and/or _LoadSetting_<PropertyName="CBlkPage.Min_Count_Black.Int" Value="500" Comment="DEFAULT 450" />

    Note The XML string contains VRS settings (or properties) that change image enhancement process behavior. At runtime, the system uses these additional settings to enhance the image. Setting these parameters to larger values forces more pages to be considered as blank.
